Some projects come into the workshop with a quiet sense of certainty. This one arrived with a client from Vertou, a wedding anniversary to celebrate and a very clear idea: a Tahitian pearl ring set in white gold. From our very first conversations, I understood that I would not simply be making an object. I would be giving form to something precious, far beyond the metal itself.

A wedding anniversary and gold entrusted with confidence

In my workshop in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, near Nantes, I receive all kinds of commissions. This one, however, had a particularity that moved me: the gold needed for the ring was brought to me by the client herself. I did not take it as a mere technical detail. To entrust one's own metal to a jeweller is to place in him a trust that carries real weight. This gold already had its place in her life, and it was now to carry the wedding anniversary she wished to celebrate.

I made myself a promise that day: this ring would not simply be beautiful. It had to become a lasting symbol of the love this marriage had nurtured, and be something she could wear for many years without ever tiring of it.

An 11 mm Tahitian pearl, chosen with care

Everything began with the pearl. It measures 11 mm, a fine, generous size that is noticed without ever calling attention to itself. What struck me as I held it in the palm of my hand was its mysterious lustre: a light that does not impose itself, that lets itself be glimpsed and that one longs to gaze at for a long time. It was selected with great attention, to match in every respect what the client had in mind.

A pearl of this size raises a simple but demanding question: how do you show it to its best advantage without overwhelming it? My answer comes down to one principle. The mount must step back before the gem, while holding it with assurance. It is a delicate balance, and I knew I would have to return to it several times before I was satisfied.

From drawing to casting: the white gold takes shape

I began with the drawing. A few sketches were enough to find the line: a supple white gold mount that follows the roundness of the pearl and lets the light pass through it. I chose white gold for a precise reason. Its cool, clear brilliance reflects the light and brings out the depth of the pearl, where a warmer metal would have softened it.

Then comes the stage where the project becomes tangible. The gold entrusted by the client was first refined, then prepared for melting. I never forget this moment: a metal one knew in one form is transformed, before my eyes, into a new material, ready to receive another destiny. Once the gold was melted, I was able to bring the mount into being, an elegant setting that embraces the pearl without dominating it. That is exactly the effect I had been seeking since the very first sketch.

Precision with no room for error

On this piece, there was no room for error. Every movement was therefore measured, checked and, where necessary, redone. When the metal belongs to the person you are working for, the responsibility is felt in your fingertips. I believe this tension, when used well, makes the work truer.

Setting and polishing: the pearl's casket

Setting a pearl calls for gentleness. Unlike a hard stone, it fears abrupt movements, and it must be held firmly without ever being constrained. I adjusted the mount to its shape, millimetre by millimetre, until the pearl sat naturally, as if it had always been there.

Polishing brought the work to a close. It is a stage I love deeply, because it reveals everything. The white gold took on its shine, the surfaces softened, and the ring at last found its definitive character. This bespoke jewel now existed, with its own light and personality. I committed myself to every detail, because I was determined that the ring would be ready in time for the wedding anniversary.

The day the ring was handed over

I presented the finished ring to the client, and I watched her face more than the jewel. There was surprise at first, then an emotion that rose gently and overcame her entirely. I did not try to fill the silence that followed. Some moments are complete in themselves, and this one has remained etched in my memory.

The satisfaction I feel at such moments is immense, and it never fades. To create a white gold Tahitian pearl ring from a client's own gold is to forge a rare bond between the one who makes and the one who will wear. Each time, that bond reminds me why I do this work.

Come and talk about it at the workshop
